This photo section will change with the seasons. Right now we are featuring day camp, although some of the activities are also enjoyed during field trips:
The moon bounce is one of the highlights of Summer Blast-Off Week and County Fair. Students on field trips enjoy it as well.
This photo was taken during Movie-Making Week when we were acting out scenes from the Bible. Every year movie-making week has a different theme (in 2008 it will be the American Revolution.) Campers are divided into teams which function with a military-type setting (campers can earn ranks such as lieutenant and colonel), and each team builds a fort (below photo.) On Friday the teams pound each others' fort in an epic water balloon battle. The fort which withstands and protects the best is declared the winner.
This jousting game is an example of how creative we can be with the water theme. Both Splish-Splash Week and Super Soakin' Safari feature unique aqua adventures.
This photo shows some campers after an adventure game. Adventure is very important at Antietam Recreation. Almost every Friday we have a special game, such as a camper/counselor hide-n-seek, a treasure hunt, or the stagecoach game.
Drama/dress-up/puppets/tumbling are key elective classes at camp. We are blessed to have the Western Town as a back-drop for each weekly play, which is presented at Friday morning's Camp Show. Above, campers take a bow after a performance. Below, parents and campers watch a puppet show in the pavilion.
Girls and boys alike enjoy our extensive costume collection. The above campers are dressed for a Wild West play. Below, we are up-close with a team of budding puppeteers.

Speaking of adventure, few parents truly come to understand the fierce competition that is the Indiana Jones Tournament. Campers who wish to participate put their endurance and strength to the test with such challenges as the gauntlet (where they have to run between two lines of campers armed with soft balls), or the alligator pit (a VERY muddy adventure!). There are six winners, girls and boys in various age categories, who earn the golden chalice, and get to wear the classic hat/whip. In the below photo, a young lady is leading the pack at one leg of the race. Above, boys run through the gauntlet.
We are so fortunate to have Head Counselor Jim Hutson on our staff. Last summer Jim celebrated his 27th anniversary with Antietam Recreation. He is a former Marine, and current teacher and coach at Clear Spring High. Jim runs a tight ship, and can be stern when campers aren't in line, but ultimately, he is a hero and a role model for the whole camp. One of the things that makes Jim so special is that he wholeheartedly involves himself in the activities. Below, Jim is seen first directing a scene during Movie-Making Week, and then ready to play paintball one day after camp.
Here we have Andy Rotz (known to some as Cowboy Andy) teaching a young camper to ride. The riding classes are a casual blend of instruction and fun.
Bob and Mary Rotz, the owners of the camp, remain highly involved in the everyday activities. Mary can often be seen teaching swimming in the pool. Bob teaches riding, runs the boat slide, heads all field trips, and helps with whatever else is needed (like a hayride, above).
When we hire counselors, one of the qualities we are searching for is high enthusiasm and a heart that will give 110%. Our counselors are not at all baby-sitters, nor are they only intended to be instructors. They are participants in the adventure of camp, alongside of the campers. Above, Ashley and Doug inspire laughing in cheering when they compete in the three-legged race during Carnival Adventures Week.
Gary and Dorothy Shank play a large role at camp with their private zoo, "Shanks Exotics." Every Friday the Shanks bring new and exciting animals for the campers to enjoy. Above, campers pet llamas which the Shanks brought in for Crazy Critter Week. |
